What to Pack in Your Hospital Bag – A New Mum’s Guide (Surrey & South London)

If you’re nearing the end of your pregnancy, you’ve probably started thinking about what to pack in your hospital bag. As a maternity and newborn photographer based in Banstead, Surrey, and working with clients from Reigate, Cheam, Cobham, Oxshott, Kingswood, and South London, I often chat with expectant mums about preparing for birth. One of the most common questions?
“What do I actually need to take to the hospital?”

To help you feel calm, prepared, and confident, I’ve put together a helpful guide on what to pack in your hospital bag, for you, your baby, and your birth partner.

When Should You Pack Your Hospital Bag?

Most mums aim to have their hospital bag packed by 36–37 weeks, just in case baby makes an early appearance. It’s a great way to feel more in control as you approach your due date  and ensures you’re not panicking at the last minute.

Hospital Bag Checklist: Essentials for Mum

1. Maternity Notes & Birth Plan
These are the first things your midwife will want to see, keep them at the top of your bag.

2. Comfortable Clothing

Loose, breathable PJs or a nursing nightdress for after birth

A robe or cardigan

Slippers or flip-flops

Comfy going-home outfit (maternity leggings or a stretchy dress are perfect)

3. Toiletries

Toothbrush and toothpaste

Hairbrush and hairbands

Face wipes, lip balm, deodorant

Shower gel and shampoo

Maternity pads (bring plenty)

Breast pads and nipple cream

Hand sanitiser

4. Snacks & Drinks
Energy-boosting snacks like cereal bars, dried fruit, and sweets can help during early labour. Pack water or isotonic drinks too.

5. Phone Charger (with a long cable!)
Trust me, hospital plug sockets are never near the bed!

What to Pack for Baby

1. Sleepsuits and Vests (x3–5)
Newborns can be messy, bring spares!

2. Hat, Mittens & Socks
Especially important if you’re giving birth in colder months.

3. Muslin Cloths
Essential for burping and cleaning up spills.

4. Nappies & Wipes
Bring a full pack of newborn nappies and some gentle wipes or cotton wool.

5. Baby Blanket & Going-Home Outfit
Something soft and cosy — and picture-perfect for those first precious photos.

6. Car Seat
You won’t be able to leave the hospital without one!

7. Baby Formula

Just in case it might be needed and if you do not wish to breastfeed

Top Tips from Surrey Mums

Living in Surrey or South London? Every hospital is slightly different in what they provide. If you’re giving birth at Epsom Hospital, East Surrey Hospital, St Helier, or Kingston Hospital, I recommend calling ahead or checking their maternity page online for up-to-date lists.

Some hospitals provide nappies or maternity pads, while others expect you to bring your own. Always better to be over-prepared!

Bonus Tip: Pack for Photos!

If you’re planning newborn photos at the hospital or soon after (like a Fresh 48 session), bring:

A neutral swaddle or baby wrap

A simple outfit or onesie (avoid bold prints or logos)

A hairbrush or makeup basics if you’d like to feel refreshed

Even if you’re not booking professional hospital photos, you’ll treasure those first snaps forever. If you’re in Surrey or South London, I also offer studio newborn sessions in Banstead, perfect for capturing your baby in those sleepy, early days.

Final Thoughts

Packing your hospital bag is a lovely way to slow down, prepare emotionally, and get excited about meeting your baby. Keep the bag by the door and let your partner know where everything is just in case you go into labour in a rush!

If you’re based in Banstead, Surrey, or surrounding areas like Coulsdon, Reigate, Cheam, or Oxshott, and you’re looking for elegant, natural newborn or maternity photography, I’d love to hear from you.
