When Is the Best Time to Book a Maternity Photographer in Surrey?
Pregnancy has a way of moving through its own private calendar. Some weeks feel endless, others disappear before you have had a chance to catch your breath, and somewhere in
Bringing your baby home for the first time is something you never quite forget. The house feels different. Time feels different. Everything becomes quieter and more important all at once.
Those early days can feel like a blur of feeding, sleeping, and simply learning each other. And before you know it, your baby is already changing.
As a newborn photographer based in Banstead, Surrey, I often meet parents who want to remember these first days exactly as they are. Not perfectly staged or overly styled, just calm, honest portraits of the beginning of their family’s story.
If you are considering newborn photography, here are a few things that can help you feel prepared.
When to Book a Newborn Photography Session
The best time to arrange your newborn photoshoot is usually before your baby arrives. Many families get in touch during the second trimester so we can plan availability around their due date.
Newborn sessions often take place within the first couple of weeks after birth. During this stage babies tend to sleep more deeply and naturally curl into the soft positions that many parents love in newborn portraits.
That said, there is always flexibility. Every baby is different, and beautiful images can still be created even if your little one is slightly older.
What Happens During a Newborn Photoshoot
One thing parents often tell me afterwards is that the session felt much calmer than they expected.
There is no pressure to rush. Everything moves at your baby’s pace.
If your baby needs feeding or settling, we simply pause. Those moments are completely normal and often become part of the experience itself.
During the session we usually create a mix of photographs, including:
These small details are often the images families return to most often.
Preparing for Your Session
Parents sometimes worry about bringing the right things or knowing how to pose. In reality, newborn sessions are designed to feel simple and relaxed.
My Banstead studio is prepared with wraps, fabrics, and soft textures chosen specifically for newborn photography. Styling remains minimal so the focus always stays on your baby.
To make things even easier for parents, I also have a beautifully curated client wardrobe available for mothers, so there is no need to buy anything new for the session. Many mothers appreciate being able to choose from elegant, comfortable pieces that photograph beautifully without adding another task during those early weeks.
For babies, I provide handmade organic cotton outfits and soft blankets, carefully selected to complement the calm, natural style of the portraits.
This means most families simply arrive with their baby, and everything else is ready.
If you are unsure what to wear or would like help choosing something from the wardrobe, I am always happy to guide you beforehand.

Why Many Families Choose a Studio Session
Many parents across Surrey and South London prefer studio newborn photography because the environment is set up specifically for this stage.
The studio is quiet, warm, and comfortable, which helps babies settle easily. It also gives parents a chance to step away from the busyness of home and spend a little time simply enjoying their baby.
For many families, the session becomes a small pause in those busy early weeks.
Creating Photographs That Last
Newborn portraits are often the beginning of a family’s photographic story.
Over time, many parents return for milestone or family sessions as their children grow. The images from those first days often become the ones that feel most meaningful later on.
They remind you not only of how small your baby once was but also of the quiet, emotional beginning of family life.
