There is something about the first year of a baby’s life that moves faster than any other. Every few weeks brings something new. A different expression, a new sound, a way of holding their head, reaching for something, or looking at you that did not exist the week before.
You notice these things in the moment, but the moments themselves have a habit of blurring together before you have had a chance to hold onto them properly.
A baby photoshoot is not just about capturing how your baby looked. It is about preserving the little details, expressions and connections that make each stage so special. From those quiet first weeks to their first birthday, every stage brings something different to photograph.
I’m Natasha, a baby photographer based in Banstead, Surrey. I photograph babies throughout their first year, from those precious newborn days through to milestones and first birthdays.
This is everything you need to know about photographing your baby throughout their first year.
One of the questions I am asked most often is whether parents have left it too late to book a baby photography session.
The answer is almost always no.
The newborn stage is beautiful and specific, but your baby’s first year is not a single moment. It is a series of stages, each one distinct and fleeting in its own way. Your baby’s expressions, movements and personality will continue to change, giving you new things to capture as the months go by.
Wherever you are in that journey, there is an opportunity to create photographs that reflect exactly who your baby is at that stage.
The first few weeks are a beautiful time to document your baby, when they are still wonderfully small, sleepy and naturally curled. Tiny details that change so quickly, from delicate features and little fingers to the way they settle in your arms, make this stage particularly special to photograph.
The first 1 to 2 weeks are often ideal for those classic sleepy newborn images, but there is no strict cut-off. Babies change quickly, and every stage has something different to offer. If your baby is older, we simply embrace the stage they are in and create images that reflect their personality and your connection as a family.

Newborn sessions are calm and baby-led, with plenty of time for feeding, settling, cuddles and family photographs. The focus is on capturing those first fleeting days naturally and beautifully.

Between three and six months, your baby’s personality really starts to emerge. They are becoming more alert and curious, making eye contact, responding to your voice and showing you more of those wonderful expressions that make them completely themselves.
This is a lovely stage for parents who want photographs full of interaction and personality. Smiles, laughter, curious expressions and those little moments of connection can all become part of the story.
This can be a lovely stage to photograph, with sessions naturally becoming more playful and interactive than in the newborn days. Your baby may spend time looking around, reaching for things, enjoying tummy time or interacting with you. We follow their natural rhythms rather than expecting them to stay in one position.
The result is a collection of photographs that captures your baby as they are becoming more expressive and engaged with the world around them.
Once your baby is sitting confidently and unaided, this is a wonderful stage to capture their developing personality and all the little expressions that make them unique.
This is the stage I particularly recommend for milestone or sitter photography. Your baby is more interactive, more expressive and increasingly curious about everything around them. They reach, grab, laugh, explore and communicate in their own little ways.
A milestone session at this stage can include beautiful sitting portraits alongside floor play, cuddles and natural interactions with parents. We can capture those big expressions and little moments of concentration that make this stage so memorable.
There is something particularly lovely about photographing a baby at this point in their development. They are still wonderfully baby-like, but their individual personality is becoming clearer with every photograph.

A first birthday is a wonderful opportunity to document everything that has changed during that first year.
My first birthday sessions can begin with relaxed family and individual portraits, giving us the opportunity to capture your baby’s personality before we introduce the cake.
For families who love a little fun and mess, we can then move on to the cake smash, capturing all those wonderfully unpredictable moments as your little one explores their cake. Afterwards, there is time for a little splash in the tub, which is often a lovely way to finish the session.
A first birthday session does not have to include a cake smash, though. Some families prefer simple, timeless portraits that focus entirely on their baby’s expressions, personality and the milestone they have reached.
Whichever approach you choose, the aim is the same: to create photographs that capture exactly who your child is on this special day.

Preparation looks a little different depending on your baby’s age and the type of session you are booking.
Before your session, I will send you a pre-session guide with helpful information tailored to your baby’s stage. This helps you know what to expect and gives you plenty of guidance on what to bring, what to wear and how the session will work.
I also provide styling guidance before your session and have a carefully curated client wardrobe available for mums, babies and children. This means you do not have to worry about finding the perfect outfits yourself, and we can choose pieces that complement the simple, timeless style of the photographs.
For newborn sessions, there is plenty of time for feeding, settling and cuddles. With older babies, we allow their natural personality and energy to shape the session.
The most important thing is not to worry about making everything perfect. Babies do not always follow a plan, and that is completely fine. My role is to create a relaxed environment where we can work with your baby rather than expecting them to behave in a particular way.
Every baby session is different because every baby is different.
Some babies are full of smiles and expressions. Others need a little more time to warm up. Some are constantly on the move, while others are happiest being cuddled by their parents.
I keep the approach relaxed and natural, using natural light and simple styling so that your baby remains the focus.
Parents and siblings can also be included, creating photographs that show not only how your baby looked at that particular stage, but the relationships and connections surrounding them.
Around one to two weeks after your session, I invite you back to the studio for your personal viewing appointment.
This is when you will see your finished images for the first time. We can go through the photographs together and talk through the different ways you might like to preserve them.
I offer fine art prints, bespoke framed artwork, handcrafted albums and digital collections. These photographs are created to become part of your home and your family’s story, rather than simply remaining on a screen.
Many families return for different stages as their children grow, creating a collection that follows their journey from those first newborn days through milestones and first birthdays.
If you’re wondering which stage is right for your baby, get in touch, and we can talk through your plans and find the session that feels right for your family.

If you are expecting a baby, a newborn session is a beautiful place to begin. The first few weeks offer the opportunity to capture those tiny details and sleepy moments, but there is no need to plan your baby’s entire first year at once.
As your baby grows, you can decide whether a milestone or first birthday session feels right for your family.
Not at all. Every stage brings something different to photograph. Whether your baby is a few weeks old, discovering their expressions at three months, sitting at six months, or approaching their first birthday, we can create photographs that reflect who they are now.
For newborn sessions, I recommend booking during pregnancy so that we can plan around your due date. For milestone and first birthday sessions, it is best to get in touch ahead of your preferred date so we can find a time that works for you.
My studio is based in Banstead, Surrey, and welcomes families from across Surrey and South London, including Epsom, Reigate, Cheam, Coulsdon, Cobham and beyond.
My session fee covers your booking, the photography session itself and your personal viewing and ordering appointment. Products, including fine art prints, framed artwork, albums and digital files, are chosen separately at your viewing appointment once you have seen your images.
