Pregnancy has a way of moving through its own private calendar. Some weeks feel endless, others disappear before you have had a chance to catch your breath, and somewhere in between, most expecting mothers ask me the same question. When should I actually book my maternity photographer in Surrey?
It is one of the questions I hear most often, so I want to answer it properly, with real timing, real numbers, and the kind of honest guidance I would give a close friend.
What is the best time to book a maternity photographer in Surrey?
Most maternity photographers recommend booking your session between 20 and 28 weeks of pregnancy. The photos themselves are usually taken a little later, between 28 and 34 weeks, when your bump has a beautiful roundness, and you are still comfortable enough to enjoy the experience fully. Booking early simply means your preferred date is secured well before that window arrives.
A maternity session only really works within a fairly narrow window. Too early, and the bump has not quite found its shape. Too late, and many mothers feel tired, swollen, or simply ready to meet their baby rather than stand in front of a camera.
This is why timing is not just a scheduling detail. It shapes how comfortable you feel, how your bump photographs, and how relaxed the whole experience can be. Booking ahead protects all of that.
In my experience photographing expecting mothers across Surrey, most reach out around 20 to 24 weeks. At this stage, you usually have a clear due date, your energy has often returned after the first trimester, and there is still plenty of time to plan outfits, choose a location, and look forward to the session rather than rush into it.
Surrey gets busy for maternity photography, particularly through spring and early autumn when the natural light is at its softest. If you have a date in mind, even a rough one, I always recommend reaching out as early as you comfortably can.
Once your session is booked, the photos themselves are best taken between 28 and 34 weeks. Your bump will have a lovely, rounded shape by this point, your skin often has that pregnancy glow people talk about, and you are usually still mobile and comfortable enough to move, sit, and pose with ease.
Some mothers prefer to wait closer to 36 weeks, particularly if they want a fuller bump in their photos. I am always happy to talk through what feels right for you during a quick chat before we confirm your date.
One of the loveliest parts of planning a maternity photoshoot in Surrey is choosing where it happens. My natural light studio in Banstead is calm, private, and designed to put you completely at ease. It works beautifully whatever the weather, and there is no pressure to plan around sunshine.
Some mothers prefer outdoor maternity photography among the Surrey countryside, using soft natural light and open green spaces for a more relaxed, documentary feel. Both styles photograph beautifully. It really comes down to what feels most like you.
Mothers visit my studio in Banstead from Epsom, Reigate, Cheam, Coulsdon, Croydon, Kent, Surrey, and London to document this beautiful chapter of their life.
If you reach out later than planned, please do not assume you have missed your window. I always do my best to fit expecting mothers in where I can, even close to their due date. That said, the later you book, the fewer dates tend to be available, particularly during busier months.
If your bump is already well developed and you are reading this wondering whether it is too late, it almost certainly is not. Get in touch and we will find a way to make it work.
After photographing many Surrey mothers through this particular season of life, I usually recommend booking around 24 weeks. It gives you breathing room, removes the worry of finding availability, and means your session can be something you look forward to rather than squeeze in.
Many mums tell me they almost waited too long to book because they did not feel photo-ready. Almost every single one later tells me they are glad they did not miss this stage. Your body, your bump, and this particular chapter only look like this once.

When should maternity photos be taken?
Most maternity photos are taken between 28 and 34 weeks of pregnancy, when the bump is fully visible and mothers are still comfortable enough to enjoy a relaxed session.
Can I book during the third trimester?
Yes. While I recommend booking your maternity session earlier to secure your preferred date, third-trimester bookings are absolutely possible. I will always do my best to find a date that works for you.
What should I wear for the maternity session?
I have a curated wardrobe of flattering, elegant pieces available during your session, so there is nothing to buy and nothing to worry about. Many mothers combine one of these with something of their own for a look that feels personal.
Should my partner attend the maternity session?
Many mothers choose to bring their partner along, and some of the loveliest images come from those quiet, in-between moments together. It is entirely your choice, and either way, the focus of the session always stays on you.
